TYPES OF THERAPY
Sometimes the focus is on the past and how and why these problems developed (psychodynamic psychotherapy), sometimes the focus is on a current crisis (crisis therapy), sometimes on thought patterns and behaviors (cognitive behavioral therapy), sometimes on treating symptoms and disorders with specific medications (psychopharmacology), and sometimes on using validated complementary therapies (ie nutrition, vitamins, exercise, light therapy) to improve symptoms and overall physical and mental health.
No two people are the same so a therapy plan is tailored to each individual. The benefit of being treated by a psychiatrist with my experience is that I am able to use the specific modality or modalities that are right for you. In addition, as a physician I am also uniquely able to determine when medical problems (very often undiagnosed) may be impacting your psychological state.
